History of Glamour Photography

Glamour photography is the photographing of a model (usually female), in a way that is intended to be erotic, yet not p0rnographic.

What is considered "glamour" has changed with the times. In the 1940s, clothed pin-up pictures were glamour. Many movie stars were featured in pin-up poses showing them in swimsuits. In the 1950s and early 1960s, photographers such as Peter Gowland produced glamour images with partial nudity.

In recent years, many "top shelf" magazines like Penthouse, Hustler, and Club have moved in the direction of explicit penetration and sex to compete with the spread of easily available, hardcore Internet p0rnography. At the same time, the less revealing style of glamour photography continues in men's magazines like Maxim, Loaded, and FHM, which have been successful in large part because they can be openly displayed alongside other mainstream magazines and sold to minors.

Glamour photography is essentially the same as fashion photography: you are working with models, acting as a director for your shoot and it is up to you to get the best out of your models and get the best results from your own skills.

The irony of glamour photography's public acceptance is the elements of it are often found in most photography. You have wedding photographers shooting photojournalistic images, but at the same time, they add just a touch of glamour in most of their "bride" photographs. Other photographers add the element of glamour in their photojournalism, nature, portraits, and fashion images, sometimes knowingly, and sometimes unknowingly.

The evidence of glamour in images is found through the smiles on model's faces - and these rarely show teeth, only the harmony of the model's eyes with the corner's of her lips. Magazines like Maxim, FMH, Details, and photographers like David LaChapelle have imbedded this in our minds, as they are masters of blurring fashion with glamour in their photographs through the use of smiles on model's faces.

Glamour photography is one of the most popular and lucrative genres in the business. Many top professional photographers have made their reputation within this competitive area. There are also many ways to approach glamour photography, and each photographer has his or her own ideas, style, and techniques.
